May 5, 2009 – one week from today – is a day that could change the future of school food.
Please join the movement for better school food by taking action in three simple ways.
A tasty, healthy school meal designed by high school students in Chicago will be served in the Capitol Hill cafeteria and at a nearby Congressional briefing on the future of school food, where the students will prepare the meal with White House chef Sam Kass. The meal, which won first place in HSC’s Cooking up Change healthy cooking contest, will also be served to more than 40,000 students in cities across the U.S.
Please take a moment to urge your elected leaders to eat (school) lunch on May 5 and to support a strong, well-funded reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act that will make this type of healthy meal a daily reality in our nation’s schools.
Now, HSC has a short time to raise the funds for the Chicago public high school students who designed the lunch to travel to DC to prepare the meal with White House chef Sam Kass at the Congressional briefing. Can you help make this trip possible by contributing to the students’ travel? Even a small donation will help create a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students and send a powerful message to policy-makers about the need for fresh, healthy school food.
Thank you for joining this effort to change the future of school food!
Pass it on!
Awesome weekend in south OC! Mood for Food and the Big Green Table went to the Ecology Center of San Juan Capistrano. A Non Profit promoting organic local farming, indigenous plant generation, and community eco education. Evan Marks the founder along with many volunteers and supporters made a very magical day of convergence of like minded communally conscious beings. Amongst some of the festivities were native organic plants and flowers, books, and crafts. Kids and dogs were a plenty with earthy activities like face painting, organic tie-dye t-shirt making by Volcom V-Co logical division
, eco-comic books about the Earth Bug Crew plus a solar oven with baked organic chocolate chip cookies. Beverages and Food were provided by Guayaki Natural Energy and Sandella’s Flatbread of Aliso Viejo delicious hummus wraps plus yummy raw cacao by Chocolatl
Adjacent to the Congdon House
home of the Ecology Center is the South Coast Farms which was bustling with patrons all purchasing organic fruits and vegetable from on property and off including parts of the local region. Families and friend of the center came to support an Earth Day celebration the first for the center since its inception in November. The atmosphere was peaceful, transparent and harmonious. Children with paint on them climbing on old tractors, adults discussing yoga, earth, food, plants, dogs, surf, baseball and church, an awesome world of sustainability at work. Thanks South O.C. for supporting this center for sustainability. Look for more events soon at www.theecologycenter.org
Coming in September is the Green Feast local farm fresh sustainable meal, The Green Feast hosted by Chef Mead from Sage Restaurant get your ticket early this will sellout.

Soy campaign
A great deal of supermarket products contain soy. An obvious example is soy sauce, but soy is also used for the production of eggs, milk, chicken and meat. The majority (roughly 66%) of the global production of soybeans goes into cattle feed. Unfortunately, the large-scale cultivation of soybeans, especially in South America, has caused the disappearance of hundreds of square kilometres of tropical forest each year.
